Pronunciation tip: Edin-bra. Roll the R if you can.
We got over to Edinburgh for a couple of days at the end of August and met up with Shawn and Moira and Duncan and Fiona from Seattle. Moira is from Edinburgh and led us on a couple of quick tours around town. It’s a beautiful, compact little city full of very regal old stone buildings. The weather was highly changeable during our visit and I suspect that’s how it is most of the time—no ray of sunshine should be taken for granted.
Here are some pictures in no particular order:
Duncan and Louis outside the castle
Shawn, Duncan, Moira and Fiona atop “Arthur’s Seat,” the mountain-ette at the edge of town.
Jonetta and Moira. Lucky shot.
Saturday night we were treated to a scotch tasting at the home of Moira’s brother John. John sorted everything by region and we were able to taste various Speysides, Highlands, and Islays. A wonderful experience. Dinner followed—I don’t remember much about that.
A teaching moment.
We picked up two of our favorites at the duty free shop the next day: Highland Park, from the Orkneys, and Bunnahabhain, an Islay. Copenhagen is on the exact same latitude as Edinburgh (55 north), and I’m counting on these beverages providing something of an antidote to long dark winter nights
